On this record, Ornette Coleman abandons conventional structure and lets collective improvisation unfold as a single, unbroken event. Two quartets collide and converse, producing a sound that feels less composed than discovered, raw and urgently alive. The music resists comfort, replacing swing with friction and certainty with risk. The album is named after the then-nascent Free Jazz movement and while critics and fans are divided between love and hate, its place in the Olympus of jazz is undisputed.
