Walter Theodore "Sonny" Rollins, born September 7, 1930, is an American retired jazz tenor saxophonist who is widely recognized as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians of all times and has been called "the greatest living improviser".
After a difficult youth with several months in jail, Sonny recorded recorded over sixty albums as a leader in a seven-decade career.  A number of his compositions, including "St. Thomas", "Oleo", "Doxy", and "Airegin", have become jazz standards.

Sonny Rollins on Impulse!

"Sonny Rollins on Impulse!" is Rollin's first to be released on the Impulse! label, featuring performances by Rollins with Ray Bryant, Walter Booker and Mickey Roker.

The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek states: "This date is significant for the manner in which Rollins attacks five standards with a quartet.... Sonny Rollins on Impulse! feels as if it were a recording Rollins had to get out of his system. But thank goodness for us because it's a winner through and through."
